The great majority of injuries during a hurricane are cuts caused by flying glass or other debris. Other injuries include puncture wounds resulting from exposed nails, metal or glass, and bone fractures. To get through the storm in the safest possible manner:

  • Cover windows and doors with: ALUMINUM, STEEL, or LEXAN storm panels, colonial shutters, roll ups, Bahamas shutters approved by the Florida Building Code
  • Prepare to evacuate to a shelter or neighbor’s home if your home is damaged; or if you are instructed to do so by emergency personnel
  • Turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest settings and keep them closed as much as possible so that food will last longer if the power goes out.
  • Stay in a secure room – stay away from windows
  • Do not use any unnecessary electrical items
  • Monitor weather and Civil Service bulletins
  • Have all necessary supplies on hand
  • Remain indoors when the eye moves over your area because the storm will resume shorty
